EDUCATION OR CORRUPTION … Chapter 1

EDUCATION OR CORRUPTION … Chapter 1

“WHEN EDUCATING THE MINDS OF OUR YOUTHS, WE MUST NOT FORGET TO EDUCATE THEIR HEARTS” – Dalai Lama

I know and understand that am not the best person to address this subject since I belong to the same society, and am not that perfect. I am also not the best student in my class. I can’t deny the fact that education system in our nation is corrupt. I don’t have a Ph.D., a doctorate, or even a degree but I think with the knowledge that I have am able to differentiate between good and bad. As a matter of fact, I’ve participated in corruption either directly or indirectly: being in Kenya, it’s difficult to survive without it, since it’s more of an Oxygen or water that is essential for survival. Many times, we are blind-folded that even the slightest act of humanity isn’t possible due to corruption. I still can’t boost or be too proud because even my undergraduate grades at the moment aren’t that encouraging. I could blame the nation, BUT educational achievements are personal responsibilities. Why spoil a child and then end up putting all blames on him/her? Thomas More clearly stated that,

“for if you suffer your people to be ill-educated, and their manners to be corrupted from their infancy, and then punish them for those crimes to which their first education disposed of them, what else is to be concluded from this, but that you first make thieves and then punish them.”

Bertrand Russell once said:” Almost all education has a political motive: it aims at strengthening some group, national or religious or even social, in the competition with other groups. It is this motive, in the main, which determines the subjects taught, the knowledge offered and the knowledge withheld and also decides what mental habits the pupils are expected to acquire. Hardly anything is done to foster the inward growth of mind and spirit; in fact, those who have had the most education are very often atrophied in their mental and spiritual life.”
